New Delhi. The Supreme Court has sentenced Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh, former promoters of Fortis Healthcare Ltd., to six months in jail for selling shares to Malaysian company IHH Healthcare. A bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit sentenced the Singh brothers, who were convicted in the contempt case, and also ordered a forensic audit of the sale of shares of Fortis Healthcare Ltd.
The Supreme Court has ordered a stay on IHH Healthcare's open offer to buy Fortis Healthcare shares. After this, the stock of Fortis Healthcare slipped 15% to close at Rs 265 from Rs 325 on Wednesday. The Supreme Court has referred the matter to the Delhi High Court for a hearing on the IHH Healthcare deal.
According to Fortis Healthcare, the proceedings before the Hon'ble Supreme Court have finished with specific instructions and the suo-motu contempt has been disposed of. “We shall follow the directives of the Supreme Court and seek legal counsel on our next steps.
We are dedicated to our primary mission of patient care and will continue to focus on our strategic and operational goals to enhance and extend our healthcare network. We will keep all of our stakeholders updated as needed,” it stated.
