Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram targeted the central government over the economy. He said that the government has no money to spend and is trying to hide it through data. Chidambaram said this while starting the discussion on the Union Budget in the Rajya Sabha. He said, 'You have no money. You are hiding it through statistics. These figures are not reliable. During this time he compared the government's assurance on the economy to "an astrologer" who tells his client that fate will change once the planets move to another house.'

Former Finance Minister Chidambaram said that despite the government giving the power to issue notices to low-tax officials, various major taxes such as corporate tax, personal income tax, customs, and GST remained severely reduced. Chidambaram further said, 'You promised to raise net tax revenue of Rs 16.49 lakh crore (in the current financial year). Till December, you have collected only Rs 9 lakh crore and you have asked us to believe that at the end of the year you will collect Rs 15 lakh crore. '

Chidambaram attacked the government for its poor performance in the current financial year. He said that the government had promised to spend Rs 27 lakh crore in FY 2020, but till December it could spend only Rs 11.78 lakh crore.
