Quick History Behind Naming of Cyclones

Earlier cyclones were named in arbitrary manner, In 1800s cyclones were named after Catholic Saint, after 1953 cyclones were named after feminine names, this trend changed in 1979 when giving masculine names was also started. At present there is a systematic mechanism at place for naming cyclones.

Current Mechanism Behind Naming of Cyclones

The Current system of naming cyclones was adopted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) intervene. Cyclones in North Indian Ocean are Named by group of 13 countries consisting of Bangladesh, India, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. In alphabetical order of each country's name.

The name Michuang was proposed by Myanmar, which means Strength or resilience.

Same name can be given to any cyclone after 6 years of occurrence. But if any cyclone or Hurricane proves to be of particular Damage to lives or Property, then such name is permanently retired. For example, name Katrina (USA,2005) has permanently been retired after considerable damage is caused.

Names of cyclones, which are yet to discover have already been named, name of next cyclone occurring in North Indian Ocean has been named Rewal by Oman.
