Independence Day 2023: India observes the national festival of Independence Day on August 15th every year. On this day, many brave sons and daughters of India laid down their lives in the fight for freedom, toppling British rulers who had ruled the country for over 200 years.

On August 15th, 1947, after a long struggle, India finally achieved independence from British colonial rule. Independence Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and a celebration of the nation's hard-fought liberty.

Is this year's Independence Day the 76th or the 77th?

As Independence Day 2023 approaches, the debate begins whether it is the 76th or 77th anniversary of India's independence.

The discussion stems from whether the count should start from August 15, 1947, the day when India became a sovereign nation, or a year later, when the first anniversary was commemorated.

If counted from the day of independence, India would be celebrating its 77th year of freedom. However, considering the first anniversary, it would be the 76th Independence Day.

The official stance from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), a government agency, states that last year, on August 15, 2022, India celebrated its 76th Independence Day. Following this official protocol, India is observing its 77th Independence Day in 2023.
