Twitter stated that millions of accounts are removed each week for violating our policies on manipulation and spam.

Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, recently wrote a letter to the social media platform Twitter, accusing it of stifling his voice. Rahul claimed that the number of followers on Twitter was being reduced to silence his voice due to government pressure.

Twitter has since responded. "Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to be confident that these figures are accurate and factual," said a Twitter spokesperson. Twitter has a zero-tolerance policy for spam and manipulation.

Twitter stated...

In response to Rahul Gandhi's claim that Twitter was dropping followers, Twitter stated, "We fight spam strategically and extensively with machine learning tools and consistent and ongoing efforts to ensure a healthy manner and reliable accounts." As a result, the number of followers may fluctuate.

Twitter stated that millions of accounts are removed each week for violating our policies on manipulation and spam. For more information, see Twitter's new Transparency Center update. Although there is a slight difference in some accounts, the number may be higher in some cases.

What is the problem?

In a letter to Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal last month, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated that Twitter had "unintentional complicity" in limiting freedom of expression in India. On a government campaign, he has been accused of restricting his access to the platform.

A letter dated December 27 included an examination of data from his Twitter account, as well as comparisons to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor.

In this, Rahul Gandhi stated that an average of 4 lakh followers were added to his account in the first seven months of 2021. However, following an eight-day suspension in August of last year, this growth abruptly ceased for several months. During the same time period, the number of supporters of other politicians remained constant.

"I have been informed credibly, though prudently, by the people that Twitter India has been under immense government pressure to silence my voice," he said.

“My account was blocked for a few days for no apparent reason. Many other Twitter accounts, including Sarkar's, had tweeted similar images of the same people. None of those accounts were restricted. Only my account was singled out. I am writing to you on behalf of over a billion Indians to urge you not to allow Twitter to become a pawn in the destruction of the idea of India," Rahul said.
