There has been controversy regarding raising the minimum age of marriage for girls. Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has recently said in a case from last week that no young man below the age of 21 can marry but couples below the age of 21 can live in if both agree. This means the couple can live together before the age of 21.

This decision of the High Court is in the context of the Supreme Court's decision of May 2018, which said that any young couple can live together without marriage.

The couple sought protection...

The high court made this observation while hearing a petition filed by a young couple from Punjab’s Gurdaspur district. The couple sought protection through this petition as the couple was living in a live-in relationship. Both of them are above 18 years and under the Hindu Marriage Act, legally they cannot marry before the age of 21.

The couple said that because they are in a live-in relationship, they are facing a lot of threats from their families and their lawyer has told the court that they are afraid that their family members can kill them.

After hearing the whole matter, Justice Harnaresh Singh Gill of the High Court has said that ‘it is the responsibility of the government to protect the liberty and life of every citizen. The Constitution of India protects the fundamental rights of every citizen’. After this, Justice Gill took this matter seriously and has directed the Gurdaspur SSP to provide security to the young couple.

Let us tell you that the government of India has taken the step to increase the legal age of marriage for girls in the country. The Modi government had approved the proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for females to 21 years. At the same time, the legal marriage age for boys in the country is also 21 years.
