The Election Commission has held Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma guilty of violating the model code of conduct while campaigning for the by-election and warned. The commission has said in its order that Sarma has acted contrary to the instructions and advisory of the commission. The commission has instructed them to be more careful in the future and follow the code of conduct.
During the campaign for the by-election, the commission had issued his notice on Monday, promising to build roads and other development works. This action was taken on two complaints. In his reply, Sarma had denied the allegations, saying that whatever announcements were made by him, they are related to such projects which are ongoing or have been announced in the budget. So no new announcements have been made.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has said that the Election Commission should have taken more strict action against Sarma. He also demanded Sarma and the BJP apologize to the public for violating the model code of conduct.
On the other hand, Assam Congress President, Election Commission Secretary NT Bhutia, citing the rules, said that from the time the election is announced, the ministers and other authorities will not be able to make any financial grant in any form or its promise or even the construction of roads. , provision of drinking water facilities, etc. cannot make any promise. The notice was served to Sarma on Monday following complaints from Assam Congress President Bhupen. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, the election panel said.
