Bhagat Singh Birth Anniversary: Bhagat Singh, the young, courageous, and heroic revolutionary of India, who contributed immensely to India’s freedom struggle. He was born on 28th September 1907 in Banga (presently Pakistan). The legend continues to inspire this generation with his spirit of patriotism.
Filled with a deep longing for India’s freedom, he selflessly dedicated his life to the freedom struggle of India, fighting against the British Colonial rule. He was a member of the Hindustan Republican Association which was founded by Ram Prasad Bismil. Yet, there are a number of lesser-known facts about Bhagat Singh’s life and activism.
Bhagat Singh had acquired no formal education. He had to leave school when he was 13 due to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Surprisingly, he was an avid reader and could read and understand English, Urdu, and Hindi.
Before being recognized as a revolutionary, he resorted to non-violent methods such as signing petitions and organizing discussions.
He read and appreciated the works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He believed in the socialist ideas and shared a vision for a classless society.
He broadly used newspapers, magazines, and pamphlets to assemble the masses to work for the cause of India’s independence.
He left his hometown when his parents tried to get him married, saying “My bride shall only be death” and went in to join the Hindustan Republican Association in Kanpur.
He along with Batukeshwar Dutt, threw bombs into the Central Assembly hall in Delhi, shouting “Inquilab zindabad”. He never resisted his arrest and was later given a death sentence.
During his stay in the prison, he went on to demand better treatment for prisoners of foreign origin.
He was to be hanged on 24 March 1931 but was eventually hanged a day before without any official notice because of the expected revolts that might take place.
On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hanged and we marked their death anniversary as “Shaheed Diwas”.
Bhagat Singh often used the pseudonym, “Shaheed-e-azam” which was a connotation of his unwavering dedication to his country.
