Anjali Tyagi

Delhi High Court, Said that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has stated in a compliance report submitted on 12th April 2023, its plan to bring rules to moderate the use of vulgar language on social media and other OTT platforms.

In the compliance report, the government stated that bringing rules related to moderating the use of vulgar language on social media is a policy decision and the MeitY is working on it. However, it is worth noting that the ministry took the concerns raised by the Delhi High Court in its March 2023 judgment seriously on a similar matter.

The government also informed the High Court that the process bringing the rules regarding the use of vulgar language is already in progress as part of its regular policy-making exercise.

We have been assured that the concerns of this court expressed through the said judgment will be incorporated in the future rules and regulations which will be shortly undertaken, observed Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma.

JUDGEMENT ON COLLEGE ROMANCE WEB SERIES

In its March judgment, the Delhi High Court, in a matter related to the vulgar language used in the web series College Romance, criticized the use of vulgar language in the series and also stated that it was obscene, profane, and vulgar, which will eventually lead in corrupting the minds of the younger audience.

The court also observed that there was an urgent requirement for rules and guidelines to regulate the content on social media.

Additionally, the court also refused to quash the FIR registered against the makers and actors of the web series while directing the ministry to take steps to enforce the strict application of IT Rules 2021.
