Manmohan Singh Birthday: The silent yet significant former prime minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who is known to bring powerful economic reforms into the country, is celebrating his 91th birthday today. With birthday wishes flooding from all directions, leaders from Congress as well as the BJP greeted him on social media platforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his post on X, wrote, “Birthday wishes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. I pray for his long life and good health.”

Presently, he serves as an honorable member of the Rajya Sabha. He studied at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities and shaped India’s economic policies with his prowess.

Most of us remember him as the former prime minister of our country but there aren’t many who are aware that he was the finance minister from 1991 to 1996 when PV Narasimha Rao was in power. He was the key reformer behind the economic liberalization in India during the 90s.

Here’s all we need to know about his remarkable political career

  • During his tenure as the finance minister of our country in the 90s, he abolished License Raj which was the prime reason for India’s slow economic progress and corruption and led our country out of the probable economic recession.

  • He served twice as the prime minister of our country from 2004 to 2014 and made prior changes in the sector of economy, foreign affairs, healthcare, and defense.

  • The important National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Right to Information Act (2005) were passed during his government’s rule.

  • In 2007, India reported the highest GDP growth of 7%; and became the fastest growing economy in the world. The credit goes to the then-prime minister, Manmohan Singh who introduced new market reforms.

  • In 2009, the Right to Education was introduced. Further, seven IITs were inaugurated in different states across India.

  • Apart from serving as the PM and finance minister, he was also the Governor of RBI, Deputy chairman of the planning commission, Chairman of UGC, and the advisor to Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar in 1990.
