Gyanvapi Case: On Monday, the Supreme Court directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) not to conduct any "detailed scientific survey" on the premises of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi until July 26.
The court also instructed the Muslim petitioners to approach the Allahabad High Court for remedies.
This order came after the mosque management committee filed a plea seeking a stay on a Varanasi district court's order for an ASI survey to ascertain if the mosque was built on a pre-existing temple.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud-led bench stated that the court provided the Gyanvapi mosque management committee with some "breathing time" to challenge the ASI order issued by the Varanasi court before the Allahabad High Court.
The Supreme Court instructed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who represented the Uttar Pradesh government, to inform the ASI team that there should be no "invasive work" or excavation conducted at the site.
On the other hand, Solicitor General Mehta argued that no bricks have been removed, nor is there any plan to do so.
He further explained that the current activities involve measurement, photography, and radar scans, which will not have any impact on the structure.
