UN Meeting: External Affairs Minister Jaishankar Will Leave For a Four-Day Visit to New York Today

Amid the turmoil in Afghanistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is leaving for New York City on a four-day visit to attend several UN Security Council events

Amid the turmoil in Afghanistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is leaving for New York City on a four-day visit to attend several UN Security Council events. However, this program is being held in New York City, USA from Monday. These Security Council events also include discussions on terrorism, which will be held under India's presidency of the Security Council.

Announcements by External Affairs Ministry

The External Affairs Ministry announced that S Jaishankar would also chair an open discussion on peacekeeping at the UNSC. His visit comes amid the Taliban's capture of Afghanistan and the issue is likely to be discussed with UN officials.

The External Affairs Minister will visit New York during India's presidency of the UN Security Council and will preside over two high-level events on August 18 and 19, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

A ministry statement said that in the first event to be held on August 18, there will be an open discussion on 'Protecting the Defenders: Technology and Peace Keeping'. There will be a high-level discussion on 'threats to international peace and security due to terrorist acts in the second event to be held on August 19. The Ministry of External Affairs said that both subjects are a priority for India.

India began its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on January 1 and is assuming the presidency of the powerful body for August.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that Jaishankar will chair a session on August 19. It will be on the UN Secretary General's six-month report on the threat posed by ISIL. Also, S Jaishankar will participate in bilateral meetings with foreign ministers of other member countries.
