End of 30 Years old Trend in Mizoram Politics

In the run-up to the elections, the ZPM and Lalduhoma banked heavily on decades of anti-incumbency against both the Congress and the MNF.

It is for the first time that a party other than the Congress or the MNF has been voted into power since the state’s formation in 1987.

With power having constantly swung between the two parties, the chief ministership alternated between Congress’s Lalthanhawla and MNF’s Zoramthanga since 1993. ZPM's victory ended three decade long duopoly of both parties.

ZPM which was formed 4 years ago after the merger of six smaller parties, registered a land slide victory bagging 27 out of 40 seats.
