Women's Reservation Bill: In her first speech in the new Parliament, former Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi spoke on the Women’s Reservation Bill. She expressed her support for the bill and demanded that the bill must be implemented at the earliest while also pushing for SC, ST, and OBC quotas within the reserved seats.

She also reminded the house that the reservation bill was first introduced by her husband, Rajiv Gandhi in Rajya Sabha, which was not passed.

The Congress Party supports the bill and will be very happy if the bill is passed. But I want to ask, in the past 13 years, women have waited patiently for this bill.

But now, our women have been asked to wait for some more years. How many years? 2, 3, 6, 8? With this question, Sonia Gandhi opened the debate on the bill. These remarks by the former congress president were in reference to the provision in the bill which states that the reservation will come into effect after the delimitation exercise that can’t occur before 2026.

In her address to the House, Sonia Gandhi said Indian women have been working for the welfare of the society, they have always been patient and have never complained. Former Congress supremo also alleged that the Modi Government has only presented the bill with a new name under “Nari Shakti Vandan”.

She also recalled the invaluable contributions of Indian icons such as Sarojini Naidu, Vijaya Laxmi Pandit, Aruna Asaf Ali, and many others.
