After ICC's decision to postpone T20 World Cup, now there are speculations that the IPL can be held in September-November. On the other hand, Brijesh Patel, Chairman of the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Tuesday confirmed that there will be a meeting of the Governing Council of the IPL within the next 7 to 10 days, in which the final schedule of the league can be decided.
He also said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would soon talk to the government for the necessary clearances for holding the league. In view of the current situation, the tournament is most likely to be held in the UAE. At the moment, there is no intention to shorten the schedule of the tournament. There will be 60 matches in the league. The IPL chairman's statement came at a time when the ICC on Monday postponed the T20 World Cup for a year.
When asked about the major challenges BCCI is facing in the current situation, he said that only the operational part is difficult. Then whether we play in the country or outside it does not matter.
This time, the IPL was to be held for 44 days instead of 50 days. All 8 teams were to play 14–14 matches in 9 cities. Apart from this, there were 2 semi-finals, 1 knockout and a final in Wankhede on 24 May, but the chairman of the Governing Council of the IPL has made it clear that the format will not be short anymore.
The ICC announced to postpone the T20 World Cup due to the Coronavirus on Monday. However, the ICC has not revealed the venue, where the T20 World Cup will take place in 2021 and 2022. India is going to host the T20 World Cup in 2021 and the ODI World Cup in 2023, to be held here under the ICC's Future Tour Program.
After the postponement of the World Cup, the BCCI is preparing to conduct the IPL between September 26 and November 7 this year. According to sources, the BCCI has fixed the day of November 7 for the final of the IPL so that Indian players get full time to go to Australia after that. Team India has to play 4-match Test series against Australia in December.
