Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the Breakthrough Award at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards with six players in the running, including Emma Raducanu and Simone Biles. Along with Chopra for the Breakthrough Award is British tennis star Emma Raducanu, who won the US Open title of the month at the age of 18. At the same time, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, who won the US Open, FC Barcelona footballer Pedri, world record-setter in triple jump Yulimar Rojas and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ariarne Titmus have also received nominations.

Awards to be given in a virtual ceremony

These awards will be presented in a virtual ceremony in April. Nominations for this year's seven categories of awards have been chosen by more than 1,300 leading sports journalists and broadcasters from around the world. The winner were selected by the Laureus World Sports Academy through voting, which includes 71 great players. He is the third Indian after Vinesh Phogat (2019) and Sachin Tendulkar (2000-2020 Game's Best Moment Award) to be nominated for the Laureus Award. Tendulkar received the award for the Indian players carrying him around the field after winning the 2011 World Cup.

After being nominated for the award, Neeraj Chopra said, I am very happy to receive the nomination for this award. It is a matter of great honour for me that my medal in Tokyo was recognized in the world. After coming out of a small village in India and joining sports for fitness, the journey till the Olympic medal was very good It's a great feeling to represent my country and win medals. It makes me extremely proud to be nominated for the Laureus Award with so many outstanding players.
