Delhi Metro Sets Record with 69 Lakh Passengers Despite Rain Challenges

Since Independence

On Friday, more than 69 lakh passengers travelled on the Delhi Metro despite heavy rains across Delhi-NCR. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) operated services smoothly without any hindrance, maintaining a punctuality rate of 99.95 percent.

DMRC shared this information on its social media platform X, reporting that on June 28, 2024, precisely 69,36,425 passengers used the metro.

Comparatively, the preceding day, Thursday (June 27, 2024), saw 62,58,072 passengers travelling. DMRC noted an increase of 7 lakh passengers on Friday compared to Thursday, attributing it to commuters opting for the metro over private vehicles or other modes of transport due to heavy rains in Delhi.

Despite minor water accumulation outside station premises and at entry and exit gates, the metro operated seamlessly throughout the day.

IMD Reports Second Highest June Rainfall in 88 Years

In Delhi, heavy rainfall on Friday inundated the capital, flooding streets, subways, and residential areas. The city experienced its entire four-month quota of rain in just one day.

Officially, the monsoon has commenced in Delhi. This week, heavy rainfall occurred overnight between Thursday and Friday.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this was the second-highest rainfall in June since 1936, amounting to 228 mm during this period, the most in 88 years.

The excessive water caused the Pragati Maidan underpass to submerge, necessitating its closure for public safety.
