A major rail accident took place in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday afternoon, where six coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express (15904) derailed.
The accident resulted in the death of 4 passengers and injuries to several others. The incident reportedly occurred approximately 20 kilometres ahead of Gonda railway station near Jhilahi. As the train derailed from the tracks, passengers experienced a moment of panic, with some shouting in fear.
Upon receiving the information, several high-ranking railway officials rushed to the site, and rescue operations are currently underway.
Due to the incident, 11 trains passing through this route have been diverted, and two trains have been cancelled.
Besides railway officials, a police administration team has also reached the scene. A medical team has been summoned as well, and every effort is being made to rescue passengers trapped in the coaches.
Trains scheduled on the route after the accident have been disrupted. A passenger reported that the incident occurred around 2:30 PM. The train was travelling from Chandigarh and the accident happened approximately 20 kilometres ahead of Gonda.
Two coaches completely derailed from the tracks, causing the tracks themselves to dislodge. Passengers had a difficult time evacuating from the derailed train.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed sorrow over the rail accident. In a post, he wrote, "The train accident in Gonda district is extremely saddening. District administration officials have been instructed to conduct rescue and relief operations at war footing and ensure prompt hospitalization with appropriate treatment for the injured. Praying to Lord Shri Ram for the speedy recovery of the injured."
