The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has issued an advisory related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) for tech companies. The ministry also criticized social media platforms for the misuse of AI.

According to the advisory, companies involved in AI-related activities must seek government approval before launching their AI products in the country.

Additionally, all intermediaries have been instructed to immediately comply with the advisory, and they are required to submit an action-taken report within 15 days.

What Did Government Say In Its Advisory?

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology advises all intermediaries/platforms to ensure compliance with regulations, especially regarding the dissemination of harmful or false information to users, particularly about Deepfake-related rules.

The government has also stated in the advisory that AI-based content should be accompanied by permanent meta-data or another form of identification, enabling the identification of creators in case of misuse in fake news or Deepfake content.

Stringent Measures Before AI Product Launch

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized the necessity of implementing strict regulations, especially concerning technologies like AI, as there is no oversight body for such technologies.

He stated that they are moving towards a system where launching any product would require rigorous scrutiny beforehand. The Central Minister mentioned that even if an AI model is labelled as 'under-testing,' it would still require government approval before being introduced to the market.

The advisory was issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology following alleged biased responses from Google's AI tool, GEMINI, to questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
