Basavaraj Bommai Sworn In as Karnataka’s Chief Minister

Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister. Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot administered the oath of office to Basavaraj at the Raj Bhavan.

Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister. Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot administered the oath of office to Basavaraj at the Raj Bhavan. Earlier on Monday, former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who resigned in the legislature party meeting, had proposed Bommai's name for the post. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Basavaraj on taking oath as the Chief Minister. He tweeted, "I am confident he will build on the exceptional work done by our government in the state. Best wishes for a fruitful tenure."]

In a separate tweet, the Prime Minister praised BS Yediyurappa for his work for the party and the state. "No words will ever do justice to the monumental contribution of Shri @BSYBJP Ji towards our Party and for Karnataka's growth. For decades, he toiled hard, travelled across all parts of Karnataka and struck a chord with people. He is admired for his commitment to social welfare."

No decision on Deputy CM yet:

Regarding the discussion of Deputy CM, BJP leader R Ashok says that the party will decide about it. At the same time, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi has also said that no decision has been taken regarding the Deputy Chief Minister in Karnataka yet. Meanwhile, the national leadership of BJP will decide about this.

Born on 28 January 1960, Basavaraj Somappa Bommai previously served as the Minister of Home, Law, Parliamentary Affairs of Karnataka before taking over as CM. His father SR Bommai has also been the Chief Minister of the state. A graduate in mechanical engineering, Basavaraj started politics with the Janata Dal. He was twice elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council from Dharwad in 1998 and 2004. After that, he left the Janata Dal and joined the BJP in 2008. In the same year, Bommai elected as MLA from Shiggaon in Haveri district.
