Centre Extends Tenure of Attorney General KK Venugopal for One More Year

The central government has extended the tenure of Attorney General KK Venugopal by one more year. Now, he will serve as Attorney General till 30 June 2022.

The central government has extended the tenure of Attorney General KK Venugopal by one more year. Now, he will serve as Attorney General till 30 June 2022. Venugopal appointed the Attorney General on July 1, 2017 for a three-year term after Mukul Rohatgi stepped down as the top law officer.

Along with this, the Central Government has also extended the tenure of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for 3 more years. The order will come into effect from July 1. Along with this, the tenure of five additional solicitors general for the Supreme Court also extended by three years. These include Vikramjit Banerjee, Aman Lekhi, Madhavi Godaria Divan, KM Nataraj and Sanjay Jain. The tenure of two Additional Solicitor Generals for High Courts also extended by three years – Anil C Singh for the Bombay High Court and Satyapal Jain for the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The appointment of six senior advocates as Additional Solicitor General for the Supreme Court announced for a period of three years.

Tenure of KK Venugopal:

The 89-year-old Attorney General of India KK Venugopal appointed in June 2017 after former AG Mukul Rohatgi resigned citing personal reasons. In the second term of the Narendra Modi government in 2019, Kek Venugopal remained in this post as well. Earlier, he was considered for the post of Attorney General under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The post was initially offered to Fali Nariman, who declined the position.
