Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and her French partner Carolyn Garcia entered the pre-quarterfinals of the women's doubles of the Dubai Open Tennis tournament by registering a convincing win over Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia and Katrina Srebotnik of Slovenia here on Tuesday. The pair of Sania and Garcia won the first round 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 over their Russian rival team. They will next take on fifth-seeded pair of Sisai Zheng of China and Barbora Kreyskova of the Czech Republic. This is the first tournament of Sania after recovering from a calf injury.
Four-time Grand Slam winner Belgium's Kim Clijsters' return to tennis was disappointing and lost to Spain's Garbine Muguruza in the first match at the Dubai Championships here on Tuesday. The former world number one Clijsters retired from tennis in 2012. She has now returned and was defeated 2–6, 6–7 against Muguruza in the first round. Clijsters had earlier retired in 2007 when she was to give birth to the first child. She then returned in 2009 after two years and won the US Open and Australian Open titles. However, she retired in 2012 due to injury.
