India is all set to take over as the President of the UNSC for the month of August. During this month, India will host signing events in three key areas of maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. UN General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir and India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti held a meeting on Wednesday in which both discussed Security Council's program for the month of August.
Meanwhile, Tirumurti said in a video message, "It is a singular honour for us to be presiding over the Security Council the same month when we are celebrating our 75th Independence Day". Each member country of the Security Council presides over the council for a period of one month.
According to information received from the office of the President of the General Assembly, India's Ambassador TS Tirumurti has apprised the UN General Assembly chief about the main activities to be taken up during India's presidency. These include high-level open discussions on maritime security, and technology and peacekeeping issues. As well as a high-level meeting on the emerging threats to international peace and security due to terrorist acts.
India's first working day as UN Security Council President will be August 2. Tirumurti will hold a hybrid press briefing on the Council's work schedule for the month at the UN Headquarters. According to a program released by the United Nations, Tirumurti will also provide a briefing for UN member states that are non-members of the council for the month. General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir thanked the Indian Ambassador for holding most of the Security Council meetings in person.
