External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held telephonic conversation with Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen Hassen. Both leaders discussed issues related to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as well as strengthening bilateral ties. After the conversation, Jaishankar tweeted, 'Received a call from DPM and FM @DemekeHasen of Ethiopia. Discussions covered UNSC matters. Underlined the strength of our bilateral relationship."
On the issue of peace and security in Africa, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said, "There is an urgent need to scale up efforts consistent with UN guiding principles for humanitarian assistance. Ethiopia needs all the support it can get from the international community."
The conflict in the Tigre is having a serious impact on the civilian population. Fighting in Tigray began in November when the Ethiopian government accused the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) of hijacking weapons and attacking a regional military base for arming anti-government militias. The Ethiopian army launched a military operation in the conflict-torn region, with Eritrea sending its troops to aid Addis Ababa.
Underlining the importance of mutual trust, engagement, dialogue and reconciliation for lasting peace and stability, Tirumurti reiterated India's strong commitment to Ethiopia's unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
Earlier this year, Hassen visited India and held talks with his Indian counterpart, Dr S Jaishankar. He was briefed on the issue. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian envoy also spoke about ties between India and Ethiopia and how they are cooperating amid the Covid crisis. India had sent vaccines to Ethiopia.
