The high Himalayan regions in Uttarakhand are covered with snow. The snowfall had started here in October this year. Kedarnath including Badrinath Dham in Chamoli district has received snowfall at the beginning of October this year. Not only this, but snow has also fallen in the marginal valleys of Pithoragarh district. Normally snowfall in these areas starts in mid-November. Due to this, there is a severe winter in the state. Such cold weather in November has not been seen in many parts of the state in decades. In 1985, the minimum temperature recorded in November was 3 degrees.
Right now the temperature has dropped to 3.5 degrees Celsius in Lohaghat of Kumaon, 3.9 in Champawat, and 5 degrees Celsius in Mussoorie. If the temperature drops by three degrees in the next few days, then the 36-year-old record will be broken. According to meteorologists at Arya Bhatt Institute of Observational Science and Research (ARIES), there are normally 90 to 100 days of winter in a year, which are continuously decreasing due to less snowfall and global warming.
This time the winter days may increase by 20 to 30 days. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of snowfall in the state in the last days of November. Due to this, the outbreak of cold in the plains can increase. According to the Meteorological Department, there may be snow in places above 2.5 thousand meters, while there is a possibility of light rain in the lower areas. At the same time, good snowfall is expected in the tourist places at the beginning of December.
