What is the 'law of withdrawal'?

The way to Israel is open to every Jew. The Law of Return (1950) entitles every Jew, wherever they are, the right to come to Israel and become an Israeli citizen. Legally, a 'Jew' is one whose mother has been Jewish or has adopted Judaism and does not profess any other religion. The citizenship of such people can be valid from the day they step into Israel.

After 1970, there was little change in the law. Now the children and grandchildren of Jews can also become citizens of Israel. This does not include those who were Jewish and later converted voluntarily.

How citizenship is obtained through residence and naturalization?

  • The provision of citizenship under residency is for former citizens of British Palestine. People who lived in Israel from the creation of Israel in 1948 until the citizenship law came into force in 1962, became citizens by residence or return. This law was amended in 1980.
  • The Home Minister can give Israeli citizenship to an adult if he wants. For this they must fulfill certain conditions:
  • They must have lived in Israel for three of the five years prior to applying.
  • Be entitled to permanent residence in Israel and have settled or wish to reside.
  • Has renounced previous citizenship or has proven that becoming an Israeli citizen will no longer be a foreign national.
  • If the Home Minister wants, he can also give relaxation in some of these rules.

How to get citizenship by birth?

  • Those who were born in Israel and their mother or father is an Israeli citizen.
  • Born outside Israel but parent holding Israeli citizenship, whether by birth, by law of return, by residence, or by naturalization.
  • Born after the death of either mother or father, but must have been an Israeli citizen at the time of death.
  • A person born in Israel who has never been a citizen of any other country, but they have to apply for citizenship between 18th and 25th birthday. Also must have lived in Israel for five consecutive years prior to application.
