6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal, Kills At Least 140 People

Nepal Earthquake: The death toll in Nepal reached 140 due to the powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake that hit late on Friday. The Nepal police officials confirmed on Saturday.

Rukum and Jajarkot were the two districts hit worst by the earthquake as Jajarkot was the epicenter which is somewhere 250 miles northeast of Kathmandu.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred around 11:32 pm close to the western temple town of Julna in Nepal.

According to state-run Nepal Television, more than 140 were severely injured in the Jajarkot and Rukum districts of Western Nepal.

Epicentre of the Earthquake was Jajarkot

The epicentre of the earthquake was at the Jajarkot around the Lamidanda area, according to police officials at the National Earthquake Measurement Centre.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Nepal.

Taking to his official X account, PM Narendra Modi said, "Deeply anguished by the loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. Our nation India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to give all possible aid. Our prayers are with the bereaved families and we wish for the quick recovery of the injured.

As per the statements from the office of Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Dahal all three security agencies in the country have been mobilized for the immediate rescue and relief of the injured.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dahal ‘Prachanda’ sent supplies to the earthquake-affected areas on Saturday.

The country's home ministry said that there has been more damage to property in districts like Dailekh, Rolpa, and Salyan districts.

On October 3, an array of earthquakes, the strongest being one of those that hit the magnitude of 6.2, shocked Nepal as the magnitude wasn't light. 

The earthquake hit land so hard that the tremors reverberated through parts of North India and in Delhi-NCR as well.

Next in the series is a year-back earthquake that was in November 2022 in which almost six people were killed. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.3 and struck the Doti district. 

Next in the series is the major 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the country in 2015.

More than 12,000 people were killed and the property damage was about 1 million structures in the mountainous country.
