A major news is emerging from Bangladesh. The International Crimes Tribunal has recently issued an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity during the widespread student protests.
Alongside Hasina, arrest warrants have been issued for 45 individuals, including top leaders of the Awami League, on Thursday. The news has reportedly caused a stir in Hasina's camp.
According to 'The Daily Star,' Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam stated that the tribunal, led by Judge Mohammad Golam Mortuza Majumder, passed this order.
The prosecution had filed two petitions with the tribunal, requesting arrest warrants for those involved, including Hasina.
The tribunal has reportedly ordered the authorities to arrest Sheikh Hasina and 46 others by November 18 and present them before the court.
In August, Bangladesh's interim government stated that it would prosecute those involved in the killings during the widespread student protests under Hasina's leadership at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Following the ousting of Hasina’s government, over 230 people were killed in the ensuing violence across Bangladesh.
The protests were triggered in July when students demonstrated against the controversial quota system in government jobs.
Mohammad Tajul Islam informed the media that during Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule, there were widespread human rights violations.
She imprisoned political opponents and was allegedly behind crimes such as mass killings and murders that occurred in the country from July to August.
The 77-year-old Hasina has not been seen in public since fleeing Bangladesh. Bangladesh is reportedly displeased with her presence in India, which has led to the revocation of her diplomatic passport.
