In Punjab, Congress leader and state Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi filed his nomination on Monday from Bhadaur in Barnala. Let us tell you that the Congress on Sunday released its third and final list of eight candidates for the Punjab Assembly elections going to be held on February 20. The party has fielded Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi from two seats Bhadaur (reserved) and Chamkaur Sahib and has fielded someone else in place of the three sitting MLAs.
Let us discuss here that the final list of Congress candidates came two days before the last date of filing nomination papers for the elections. The ruling party in the state has now announced candidates for all 117 seats. The announcement to field Channi from the second seat comes at a time when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had said a few days ago that the party would contest elections in Punjab with its chief ministerial face and a decision in this regard would be taken only after consultation with the workers.
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal took a dig at Channi contesting from the two seats, saying as per his party's survey the chief minister would lose from Chamkaur Sahib (reserved) seat, from where he currently represents in the assembly. Kejriwal wrote on Twitter that I had said that according to our survey, Channi Ji is losing from Chamkaur Sahib. Congress has announced that it will contest from two seats.
Congress has fielded Manish Bansal, son of former Union Minister and former Chandigarh MP Pawan Bansal, from Barnala assembly seat. The party has fielded former Patiala Mayor Vishnu Sharma against former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh from the Patiala Urban Assembly seat. Sharma rejoined the Congress this month. He was the mayor of Patiala from 2002 to 2007 during the Congress rule in the state.
Congress has fielded two-time former MP Mohan Singh Falianwala against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal in the Jalalabad seat. Presently this seat is represented by Congress MLA Raminder Singh Awla. Congress had fielded Vijay Kalra from this seat in its previous list of candidates. The party has fielded Channi from Bhadaur (reserved) seat in Barnala district. The chief minister was earlier nominated from the Chamkaur Sahib (reserved) seat, which he has been representing in the assembly since 2007.
