Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Gujarat cadre and Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana has got a big relief. The petition filed in the High Court against his appointment to the post of Delhi Police Commissioner has been dismissed. In this petition, the extension of service given to him for one year was challenging. However, the High Court was hearing the matter for a long time.
Earlier, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana had alleged that some organizations have targeted him since he was appointed as the special director of CBI. Giving his stand on the petition challenging his appointment, he said that there is a continuous campaign against him on social media, and challenging his appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner is an abuse of the legal process and there is a vendetta behind doing so.
Let us tell you that Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana was retiring in the month of July this year. But on a few days of retirement, the ministry of Home Affairs gave him an extension and appointed him to the post of Delhi Police Commissioner. However, Rakesh Asthana will continue in this post for the next 1 year.
In the year 2018, the Supreme Court had given a verdict in the case of Prakash Singh, which said that one can be appointed as the chief of police only when there are at least three months left for retirement. Citing this decision of the Supreme Court, his appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner was challenged in the High Court.
