On January 25, people from every corner of the country were honoured with the Padma Shri. Those who have contributed their whole life to society in some way or the other. One of these is the name Birubala Rabha who has been working to stop the atrocities of practices like witchcraft against women for the last 15 years. She raises her voice against the atrocities against women in remote villages of Assam.
Birubala Rabha's morale is very high after receiving the Padma Shri award. She is extremely excited and dedicates this award to those who support her in this campaign. Birubala Rabha's father, who hails from Assam, died at the age of just 6 years. After which Birubala had to leave her studies and work in the fields with her mother. After marrying a farmer at the age of 15, she used to take care of three children by weaving cloth. When her eldest son got typhoid in 1980, she went to the village quack for treatment. Where it was told that his son would die. But the child's life was saved. Since then Birubala started campaigning against quacks and witchcraft.
When Birubala saw that women in the villages were being killed as witches, she formed a group of women and raised her voice against the atrocities against women in the name of witches. She goes to school and makes children aware of staying away from witchcraft. Birubala has so far saved the lives of more than 42 women. Due to his efforts, the Assam Assembly has passed the "Prohibition of Witch Killing" bill.
