Onion prices in Bangladesh are skyrocketing. Today, the price of 30 taka sold onion has reached 260 taka per kg today. The condition is that the government of Bangladesh has to import onions by airplane to complete the consumption. Onion has almost disappeared from people's plate due to inflation.
India is also a reason behind the skyrocketing onion prices in Bangladesh, because the export of onion has been stopped from September after the surge in prices here. After the monsoon rains, onion crop was destroyed on a large scale in India, due to which there was a huge decline in onion arrivals. Due to this, there is a huge jump in the price of onion in India, although the price here is lower than in Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina deputy press secretary Hasan Zahid told news agency AFP that onions were being imported from airplanes and the Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina) said that they had stopped using onions in food. People have started protests in Dhaka over prices. In view of this, onions are being imported from Myanmar, Turkey, China and Egypt.
Meanwhile, to give relief to the people, the Government Organization Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling 45 taka per kg of onion in Dhaka. However, people have to stand in queues for many hours to buy onions at subsidized rate. Onion use has been reduced significantly in restaurants in Bangladesh. Due to this, huge impact is being seen on the sale of snacks.
Bangladesh's main opposition party has announced to start a nationwide protest against onion prices on Monday. Opposition parties believe that due to the wrong policies of the government, the prices of vegetables are touching the sky.
