Calcutta HC Orders CBI Inquiry into the Post-Poll Violence in Bengal

The Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI inquiry into the post-poll violence in West Bengal. This investigation will be done under the supervision of the court. For this SIT will be formed. CBI will be responsible for the investigation of murder and rape cases. Other cases will be investigated by the SIT. The court has also ordered the state government to pay compensation to the victims of violence.

Court has sought status report from CBI and SIT in 6 weeks. The court said that the state government has failed to conduct the investigation. Commenting on the Election Commission, the Court has said that the EC should have played a better role on violence. Kolkata Police Commissioner Somen Mitra will also be a part of this investigation.

Police had confirmed the death of 17 people

Police had confirmed the death of 17 people in the political violence. However, the BJP alleges that many times more workers have been killed than this. The BJP had prepared a list. According to the list, there were 273 incidents of murder, violence, arson and looting after the elections.

Home Ministry had to demand a report

The BJP office in Kolkata was lightened on the day of the Bengal election results in April-May. The next day the news of the lynching of two-party workers came to the fore. The Home Ministry had also sought a report from the Bengal government on the targeting of opposition party workers.

NHRC told the court – there is no rule of law in Bengal

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) submitted the report to the Calcutta High Court on July 13. The commission had told the court regarding the violence that in Bengal, not the rule of law, but the rule of the ruler. The Bengal violence cases should be investigated outside the state.

After the disclosure of the report on some news channels and websites, Mamata Banerjee had expressed her displeasure. Mamta had said that the commission should respect the judiciary and this report should not have been leaked. This report should have been placed before the court only.

1. The cases of violence after the Bengal elections should be investigated by the CBI. Serious crimes like murder and rape should be investigated.
2. The large scale violence in Bengal shows that the state government has shown appalling apathy towards the plight of the victims.
3. It is evident from the cases of violence that it has happened with the support of the ruling party. This was done to take revenge on those who 'dare' to support the other party during the election.
4. Some organs and officials of the state government remained mute spectators in these incidents of violence and some were themselves involved in these violent incidents.
