Coronavirus pandemic continues wreaking havoc worldwide. According to worldometer.com, a total of 205,703,088 cases have been reported so far. Of these, 184,688,171 people have recovered, while 4,341,222 people have died.
Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) on Wednesday said Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is around 83 per cent effective against the Delta variant. Russian Health Minister Mikhail Muraskho said on Wednesday that the vaccine's effectiveness has been reduced compared to before.
In a statement, the RDIF said, "The data confirms that Sputnik V remains protective against newly detected variants and retains one of the best safety and efficacy parameters. The Russian Ministry of Health has also published data on Sputnik V`s efficacy against the Delta variant. The vaccine is 83.1 per cent effective and shows 6x reduction of infection risk. Sputnik V is also 94.4 per cent effective against hospitalizations with 18x reduction in hospitalisation risk."
India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine 'Covaxin' is expected to get global emergency use authorization soon, according to the WHO's official. According to the information, the agency's assessment of Covaxin is at an advanced stage. A decision on emergency use authorisation is likely by mid-September.
WHO's Assistant Director-General for Vaccines, Dr. Mariangela Simao, says the UN health agency's assessment of the Bharat Biotech vaccine "quite advanced" and officials hoped for a decision by mid-September. Earlier on July 19, the World Health Organization held a meeting with vaccine maker Bharat Biotech and discussed all aspects and agreed to grant emergency authorization at the earliest.
India has been witnessing a gradual decrease in daily coronavirus cases. According to the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, India reported 41,195 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative count of the cases to 3,20,77,706. With 490 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll has increased to 4,29,669.
The country also witnessed 39,069 recoveries in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative recoveries to 3,12,60,500. With this, the country's recovery rate has increased to 97.46 %. On the other hand, India's mortality rate stands at 1.34 %. Meanwhile, the number of active cases in the country stands at 3,87,987. The active cases rate in India stands at 1.20 %.
