India's first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the Indian Drug Controller General (DCGI) for human trials. Development of the vaccine named 'Covaxin' has been done by Bharat Biotech in association with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV).
The first and second phases of testing of the vaccine will begin in the country next month. The company said in a statement that the cooperation of the ICMR and NIV was important in the development of the vaccine.

The new guidelines will be effective from 1 July 2020 and the process of opening the economy in a phased manner has been carried forward. The new guidelines are issued based on feedback received from state and union territories and extensive consultations with the respective central ministries and departments.
