On Saturday night, terrorists carried out two drone blasts in the technical area of the Army in Jammu. In this, two Air Force personnel have suffered minor injuries and the roof of a building has been damaged. On Sunday night also, a drone was sighted at the Kaluchak Military Base in Jammu. The suspected drone was seen near Sunjwan Military Station late on Monday night. The government has become alert due to drone activity thrice within three days. At present, security agencies are on alert and the attack is being investigated. This is happening for the first time that terrorists have carried out the blast through drones.

What are Drones?

You must have often seen drones being used for photography during weddings. Drones are also called Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV) i.e. unmanned aircraft. Since they are controlled remotely, no pilot is required to fly them. Think of it as a robot flying in the sky, which is controlled remotely with a remote.

How do drone strikes happen?

Drones are used by the armies of many countries. Since they are small, they are not easily caught by radar, as well as can silently infiltrate difficult areas. Because of this, their use in the army has started increasing.

Drone attacks happen in two ways. One way is that weapons or explosives are installed in the drone and the drone drops these weapons on its target. Just like a missile is fired from an aircraft.

Another method of drone attack is to turn the drone itself into an explosive. That is, the drone itself hit its target like a suicide bomb.

Is there any way to prevent a drone attack like a missile attack?

Yes. Many countries of the world adopt different technologies to prevent drone attacks. Rafale, the company that builds Iron Dome for Israel, has also developed Drone Dome, which detects drones. In this technology, drones are detected and destroyed with lasers through jammers, radars and sensors.

Similarly, American company Fortum Technology has developed a technology named Drone Hunter. It is an interceptor drone that captures the enemy drone in a net as soon as it is detected.

Apart from this, many countries also use radar and drone guns to deal with drones. In this technique, the drone is detected through frequency.

Does India have any technology to stop drone attacks?

Yes. Every major airbase, military base and international airport in India has state-of-the-art technology like AVIAN radar. Through this, a bird flying in 10 to 15 kilometres can also be detected. India also has a net fire gun that traps the drone in the net and drops it on the ground.

DRDO is also working on an anti-drone system. It is expected that this system will be ready by the end of this year. Through this, drones flying within a radius of 3 km can be detected. Also, it can destroy the drone within a radius of 2.5 km.

Where is the danger?

  • The technology currently with the Indian Army detects large aircraft and drones. We don't have the technology to recognize small drones.
  • Technology like AVIAN radar is very expensive. Putting it everywhere is an expensive task.

How deadly are drone strikes?

It depends on the type and payload of the drone. Payload i.e. how much weight the drone can carry with it. The higher the payload capacity of the drone, the more explosive material it can carry with it. America's MQ-9 Reaper drone can carry a weight of up to 1700 kg. America has used these drones many times for attacks.

How big is the drone market in India

According to a report by Forbes released in June 2020, there are about 2 lakh drones available in the Indian market with a price ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2 crore.

According to a report by FICCI-Ernst & Young, the drone market in India could be around 6.7 thousand crores by 2021.

Is there any guideline for flying drones in India?

  • Yes. The Government of India has divided them into 5 different categories based on the weight of the drones.
  • To fly all drones except Nano Drones, you have to get a Unique Identification Number from the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
  • It is prohibited to fly any drone near a military area or in a strategically important areas.
  • Flying drones is prohibited within 5 km of the International Airport and 3 km from the rest of the airport.
  • Flying drones is prohibited within 25 km of the International Border.
  • Apart from this, the height up to which they can be flown is also determined according to the category of drones.

Indian Army Drone Power

  • The Indian Army is soon going to buy 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones from the American company General Atomics.
  • India included drones for the first time in the Army Day parade on 15 January 2021. 75 drones carried out different mock missions.
  • The Indian Army is also preparing to lease 4 Heron TP drones from Israel.
  • The Indian Army also has Rustom and Nishant drones developed by DRDO.
