The Sherni actress Vidya Balan has got attention on the global platform. She has been selected by the Oscars' governing body Motion Picture Arts and Sciences among 395 people from around the world who will be able to vote at the Oscars. This 2021 Special Group is made up of 46% women, 39% underrepresented ethnic/racial communities and 53% international people, selected from 50 countries.
Apart from Vidya, Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, popularly known as TV Queen, have also been selected. Vidya Balan was recognized for her performances in 'Tumhari Sulu' and 'Kahaani'. Ekta Kapoor was selected for 'Dream Girl' and 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbai' while her mother Shobha was selected for 'Udta Punjab' and 'The Dirty Picture'.
Apart from these, other actors from around the world who have been invited to join the Academy include Robert Pattinson, Laverne Cox, Vanessa Kirby, Steven Yeun and others. Directors include Kathy Yan, Jonathan Glazer and many others. The Academy is driving a massive change, which has led to much of the inclusivity and diversity being reflected in the voting panels as well.
However, these changes were made after severe criticism at the Academy, as the majority of the Academy's voting bodies are Caucasian, leading to internal bias in the voting process for the Oscars.
Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Salman Khan among other Indian stars who have been invited to join the Academy and vote at the Oscars even before Vidya, Ekta and Shobha and filmmakers Goutam Ghosh and Buddhadev Dasgupta.
