Father's Day was first celebrated on July 5, 1908, by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Central Methodist Church in the Fairmont. Later, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the church in 1909, thought of a similar celebration for her father.
He was raised by his father, Henry Jackson Smart after his mother died in his youth. Sonora Smart, wanting to tell her father how special he was to her, organized a tribute meeting for her father in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. Her father was born in June.
After several years, Father's Day became an official holiday. In fact many people were delighted with the idea of a Father's Day. A bill was passed in 1913, which recognized the day. Eventually, in 1924, President Calvin announced that the third Sunday in June would be celebrated as Father's Day.
