In the famous Ranjit Singh murder case, the special CBI court in Panchkula today sentenced the five accused including Gurmeet Ram Rahim of Dera Sacha Sauda. In a Ranjit Singh murder case, five people, including Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, were convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula. However, all the accused including Ram Rahim have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Apart from this, a fine of Rs 31 lakh has also been imposed. Also, the other culprits were fined Rs 50,000 each.
These people were named for the murder of Ranjit Singh in 2002. Ranjit Singh was a big supporter of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and was assassinated on 10 July 2002. However, section 144 was imposed in the entire district during the hearing, a group of more than five people is not allowed as well as carrying any kind of sharp weapon is also prohibited.
Keeping in view the law and order, the production of Ram Rahim was done in the court through video conferencing. However, Ram Rahim is currently lodged in Rohtak's Sunaria Jail, from where he was virtually produced in the court. At the same time, four other convicts were brought from Ambala Jail to Panchkula Court amid tight security.
The CBI had registered an FIR in the Ranjit Singh murder case on December 3, 2003. However, the petition was filed by Ranjit Singh's son Jagseer Singh. Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed a plea seeking transfer of the murder trial against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh from the CBI court in Panchkula to another CBI court.
The CBI Special Court in Panchkula convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and five other suspects under section 302 of the IPC (murder). Gurmeet Ram Rahim is serving 20-year imprisonment for raping two of his female disciples at his 'ashram'. He was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in August 2017.
