After months of wrangling, microblogging site Twitter has finally accepted the new IT regulations in India. The Central Government on Tuesday told the Delhi High Court that Twitter Inc. has appointed permanent officers following the IT Rules, 2021. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Center, said prima facie Twitter has appointed Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer, and Nodal Contact Person. Justice Rekha Palli was hearing a petition filed by Twitter India against non-compliance with the Information Technology Rules, 2021.
Twitter on Friday informed the High Court that it has made permanent appointments to the posts of Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer, and Nodal Liaison Officer on August 4. Twitter Inc. has no corporate presence in India. He further told the court that the appointed permanent officers would report directly to the US office of the company. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Center, said prima facie Twitter has appointed Chief Compliance Officer, Resident Grievance Officer, and Nodal Contact Person.
The next hearing of the case will be on October 5. Earlier, the court had objected to the affidavit issued by Twitter, saying that the company has made casual appointments of officers. Let us tell you that there was a tussle between Twitter and the Government of India since the new IT rules came into force on 26 May this year. The government had openly criticized the social media giant for following the rules. The Government of India had made it clear that no company is above the law of the land.
