Ongoing Violence in Manipur: In a disturbing incident that unfolded late at night, a mob in Manipur took destructive actions by setting fire to Manipur Minister L Susindro's private godown in Chingarel, Imphal East district.
Adding to the chaos, the mob also made attempts to ignite the residence and other properties belonging to Consumer and Food Affairs Minister Susindro in the Khurai area of the same district on Friday night.
The situation, fortunately, was swiftly brought under control as security forces promptly intervened, preventing further damage.
To prevent the mob from encircling the minister's residence in Khurai, security forces resorted to firing multiple tear gas shells until midnight.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties in the incident.
In a separate incident on the night of June 14, unidentified individuals set fire to the house of state women's minister Nemcha Kipgen in the Lamphel area of Imphal West district.
The following day i.e. on June 15, Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh's house was targeted in an attack, with an attempt made to set it ablaze.
The ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur have tragically resulted in the loss of over 100 lives. Violent clashes have erupted in the region following a 'tribal solidarity march' held on May 3 in the hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
In Manipur, the Meitei community constitutes approximately 53 per cent of the population, primarily residing in the Imphal Valley, while the Naga and Kuki tribes account for around 40 per cent and predominantly inhabit the hill districts.
