Highly placed sources have indicated that the government may introduce a bill on implementing a Uniform Civil Code during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, set to begin next month.

The sources have also stated that the bill could be sent to the parliamentary standing committee, which would then hear the views of various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code.

This development follows a notice issued by the Law Commission of India, seeking input from stakeholders on the issue of a Uniform Civil Code.

In response to this notice, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice has summoned representatives from the Law Commission and the Law Ministry for a meeting on July 3.

Government's Active Efforts and PM Modi's Support for Uniform Civil Code

The committee's schedule indicates that it intends to discuss the public notice issued by the Law Commission and gather the views of the concerned parties.

Parliament's monsoon session is scheduled to begin in the third week of July. According to sources, the sittings will initially take place in the old Parliament building and later transition to the new building.

This indicates that the government is actively working towards introducing the bill on the Uniform Civil Code.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently voiced strong support for implementing uniform laws that apply to people across different communities.

He argued that the issue of a Uniform Civil Code should not be used to incite Muslims, emphasizing the need for a common law for all citizens.

The Supreme Court has also advocated for a Uniform Civil Code in the past, but PM Modi criticized politicians who prioritize vote bank politics over this important matter.

PM Modi's statements have sparked a nationwide debate, with opposition leaders accusing him of raising the Uniform Civil Code issue for political gain, particularly with several state elections on the horizon.

The Congress party has alleged that PM Modi is using this issue as a distraction from pressing concerns such as inflation, unemployment, and the situation in Manipur.

The concept of a Uniform Civil Code entails replacing personal laws based on religions, customs, and traditions with a single, uniform law that applies to all individuals, regardless of their religion, caste, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.
