The effect of the tension between Russia and NATO countries regarding Ukraine has started showing on other countries of the world. Amid the threat of war in Eastern Europe, concerns have risen over 20,000 Indian students studying engineering and medicine in Ukraine. Most of the Indian students studying there are from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan. A petition has been filed in the President's Secretariat in Delhi to bring back these students.

What is the demand in the petition?

Rajasthan Congress leader Dharmesh Sharma has filed a petition in the President's Secretariat in Delhi regarding the security of Indians in Ukraine. In the petition filed in the President's Secretariat, Dharmesh Sharma has said that about 18 to 20 thousand Indian students from India are studying in different universities of Ukraine. He has said that till now no action has been taken by the Government of India on this serious issue related to their lives. He said that about one thousand students of Rajasthan are studying in Ukraine.

On the other hand, if media reports are to be believed, most of the Indian students studying in tense Ukraine live in western Ukraine, while the war tension is built on the borders of eastern, southern and central Ukraine. If we talk about India, there are about 88 thousand seats in the medical colleges of India, while more than 8 lakh students take the exam to get admission to these colleges. Due to this stiff competition, most of the students who want to pursue medicine do not get admission to colleges in India.

How will Ukraine tension affect India?

  • If experts are to be believed, if the US takes steps like imposing tough sanctions against Russia, then it can increase India's problems.
  • As soon as Russia imposes sanctions, it can also have a direct impact on the defence deal with India for the purchase of S-400 missiles.
  • International affairs expert C Rajamohan said that when all the powerful countries of the world start fighting among themselves, then it will be very difficult to handle foreign policy.
  • According to Raja Mohan, if there are strict sanctions against Russia and America stops the exemption by removing the preferential nation status given to India, then it will have a negative impact on India-Russia defence deals.
  • Russia is India's oldest friend. At the same time, America is increasing friendship with India against China through Quad, which will adversely affect India's diplomacy.
  • The biggest thing is that Russia is the second largest oil producing country in the world after the Gulf countries. The outbreak of war between Russia and America over Ukraine will have a direct impact on the price of crude oil.
  • This will have an adverse effect on the global economy and may lead to another Great Depression after the slowdown of the pandemic all over the world.
