Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party has nominated its dynamic and bold leader, Atishi, for the position of Chief Minister.
During the MLA meeting held on Tuesday, it was Arvind Kejriwal himself who proposed Atishi's name, which was unanimously agreed upon. As a result, Atishi will now become the new Chief Minister of Delhi.
Several names were in the running for the Delhi CM position, including Saurabh Bhardwaj, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Rakhi Birla, but the final decision was made in favor of Atishi. Let’s now understand why Atishi became Arvind Kejriwal's first choice.
Atishi has long been considered one of Arvind Kejriwal's most trusted and close allies. She has been associated with both Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party since the time of the Anna Movement.
In just five years, Atishi has progressed from an MLA to a minister, showcasing her capabilities and dynamic personality. She first became an MLA in 2020, winning from the Kalkaji seat.
In 2023, she was appointed as a minister in Kejriwal’s cabinet, and now she has risen to the position of Chief Minister of Delhi.
During the Delhi liquor scandal case, when Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia were in jail, it was Atishi who took charge of the Aam Aadmi Party's operations.
In the absence of both prominent leaders, she effectively managed the government's affairs as well as the party organization. Whenever the Aam Aadmi Party faced challenges, she stepped up to confront opponents and maintained the morale of her party's leaders and workers.
Atishi was the only female minister in the Aam Aadmi Party government’s cabinet and became a leading voice for women within the party. She made significant contributions in the field of education and took over the education ministry after Manish Sisodia's imprisonment, managing it effectively.
Atishi has a strong grasp of organization and leadership. Her approach has always been quite aggressive towards opponents. Additionally, she has significant experience in organization and administration.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Atishi was appointed as the Aam Aadmi Party's in-charge for East Delhi. However, she lost the election to BJP's Gautam Gambhir by a margin of 477,000 votes.
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Atishi contested from the Kalkaji constituency in South Delhi. She defeated BJP candidate Dharambir Singh by 11,422 votes.
Later, following the resignations of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyendar Jain, she was appointed as a cabinet minister in the Delhi government alongside Saurabh Bharadwaj. Atishi's political journey has been marked by significant ups and downs.
