After 13 years, the court has reached a decision in the 2008 serial bombing case in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. In the bombing case, the court found 49 defendants guilty and 28 persons have been found not guilty. In total, 56 persons were murdered in the series of explosions. 21 bomb blasts shook the entire country in less than 70 minutes.
According to a senior public prosecutor, roughly 80 people were charged. The court had ended trial proceedings in the more than 13-year-old case in September of last year. The trial court had set February 1 as the date for the hearing, but it was pushed out to February 8 after the judge tested positive for the new coronavirus.
Ahmedabad was shaken by 21 bombings in 70 minutes on July 26, 2008. These attacks resulted in the deaths of 56 individuals and the injuries of almost 200 others. The authorities alleged that the attacks were carried out by members of the terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen in retaliation for the 2002 Gujarat riots, in which numerous members of the minority population were slain.
A few days after the Ahmedabad bombings, police in Surat discovered multiple bombs in various locations. Following this, 20 FIRs in Ahmedabad and 15 in Surat were filed.
The trial against the 78 accused began in December 2009 after the court clubbed all 35 FIRs together. One of the accused later became a government witness. Four more accused were also arrested later in the case, but their trial is yet to start. During the trial of the case, the prosecution examined 1100 witnesses.
