German Tennis star Alexander Zverev on Sunday won Cincinnati Open title by defeating Andrey Rublev of Russia at Mason, Ohio. Zverev defeated Rublev 6-2, 6-3 to win his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title. He became the first German champion since Boris Becker to win the title in Cincinnati. Baker won this title in 1985.
The world No. 5 player had never won a match in six previous appearances at the tournament, but this week he did one superb performance after another to clinch the title. He also won an Olympic gold medal in singles in Tokyo. Zverev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the semi-final match played on Saturday.
Earlier this year, the 24-year-old Zverev ended a three-year Masters 1000 title drought and won the Mutua Madrid Open in May. He is now ninth in the list of winning the most Masters 1000 titles since the series began in 1990. He is also the first player since Andre Agassi in 1996 to win the Western and Southern Open crown and an Olympic gold medal in the same year.
Fourth seed Rublev, on the other hand, was competing in his second Masters 1000 final. The Russian, who won his fourth ATP 500 title at the Rotterdam Open in March, registered his first victory over his own countryman Daniil Medvedev during his journey to the final in Cincinnati. The world No. 7 aiming to become the sixth different Russian to win a Masters 1000 title since the series began in 1990 and the sixth different champion at this level this season.
