Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the Australian Open tournament by defeated Dominic Thiem 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the struggling and disputed final. This is Djokovic's second consecutive and eighth Australian Open title win overall. With this, he also won his career's 17th Grand Slam title. Only Switzerland's Roger Federer (20 titles) and Spain's Rafael Nadal (19 titles) have won more Grand Slams than Djokovic.

With this win, Djokovic will replace Nadal in the latest world rankings to become the number one player in the world. No other player in the world has won the first Grand Slam of the year more than six times. Djokovic won the first set during the match, but then his rhythm deteriorated. He lost six games in a row. Djokovic now trailed by two sets. He also underwent treatment during the third set. The umpire warned him of taking too much time, so Djokovic also argued with him. After this, Djokovic returned to his old style.

There was a little struggle in the fifth set, but till Djokovic had achieved his rhythm and stopping him was not possible for Thiem. Djokovic has previously won the Australian Open in 2008, 2011 to 13, 2015, 2016, 2019 as well. Thiem, a 26-year-old Austrian player, was playing his third Grand Slam final. However, he has not won any till now.
