World No. 1 female tennis player Ashleigh Barty retired injured midway through the second set of the French Open 2021 against Poland's Magda Linette on Thursday.  Barty left the court for medical treatment after losing the first set 6-1. She was also struggling with a hip injury during the first-round match. It is not yet clear how long she will have to stay away from tennis due to the injury.

After beating Bernarda Pera in three sets on Tuesday, she said, "It's going to be a little bit tough this week. I think over the weekend we had a bit of a flare-up through my left hip." Dealing with a hip injury, Ashleigh Barty had struggled through a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win against 70th-ranked American Bernarda Pera in the first round. Last year, Barty decided not to defend her title because of the coronavirus pandemic, choosing instead to remain home in Australia.

Naomi Osaka withdraws from tournament on June 1:

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on June 1 announced her decision to withdraw from the ongoing French Open 2021. She took this decision after facing backlash from all quarters for boycotting the media at Roland Garros. Osaka did not attend the press conference after winning the first round of the French Open on Sunday, as promised, after which she was fined $ 15,000 (more than Rs 10 lakh).

Meanwhile, beat 63rd-ranked Patricia Maria Tig 6-4, 7-6 to move into second place. On Twitter, she wrote, "The best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris."
