45-year-old cricketer Darren Stevens on Friday smashed 190 runs off just 149 deliveries for Kent against Glamorgan in the County Championship. He single-handedly took the team's score to over 300. Stevens' innings included 15 fours and 15 sixes. With this, he made history in first-class cricket. He has now become the first batsman to hit the most sixes in an innings of a first-class cricket match at the age of more than 40 years. He has hit a total of 15 sixes in an innings at the age of 45 years and 21 days. Earlier this record was named after John Maclean.
The most surprising thing was that Darren Stevens single-handedly pushed forward the innings after batting at number seven after the top order failed to perform well. In fact, Darren Stevens, along with Miguel Cummins, shared a 166-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Cummins, on the other hand, scored just 1 run in this partnership, the rest of the runs came off Stevens's bat. On this basis, Kent's team scored 307 runs in 76.2 overs in the first innings. Stevens' luck continued in the Glamorgan innings, as he dismissed Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne.
Stevens has so far played 315 First-Class matches and scored 15,940 runs. The all-rounder, who bowls right-arm medium, also has also taken 565 First-Class wickets. This was his 36th first-class hundred. He is the oldest active player in County cricket since 1995. In 2019, he became the oldest player to score a first-class double-century since Walter Keeton in 1949. This year, he became the oldest Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 88 years.
