Virat Kohli Captained the ODI Side for the First Time in the Asia Cup 2014

King Kohli has been an awesome player for the Indian Cricket Team in the fifty overs format, Test matches and the shorter version of the gentlemen’s game.

Kohli had dominated every format and the Indian Premier League tournament like a boss as a batsman. But he did not win any IPL, Asia Cup or ICC trophies when he led the Indian Team and RCB side during his captaincy stint.

The King started his ODI captaincy stint in the 2014 edition of the Asia Cup which was played in Bangladesh. He led that Indian side because Mahendra Singh Dhoni was injured and missed the whole tournament.

As the vice-captain of that man in blue side, Virat was appointed as the skipper for the first time in his career.

The King started his captaincy duties with a bang as he scored a century in his very first match as the skipper of the Indian Team.

That knock came against Bangladesh and that too while chasing a decent score of 280 runs.

King Kohli scored a match-winning 136 runs and also earned a Player of the Match award in that game.

Team India Could Not Reach the Finals in 2014 Asia Cup Edition

Despite winning the first match and starting the captaincy on a winning note, Virat could not take India to the finals of the 2014 Asia Cup edition.

After India won their first match by six wickets, the team lost the important matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which was the reason why the men in the blue side couldn’t reach the finals of that edition of the Asia Cup.

India won their last game of that event against Afghanistan. But that was not enough. This was the last time Virat Kohli led the Indian team in the Asia Cup.

In 2016, Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the Indian team in the Asia Cup T20 and India won that event of the shortest format.

At the same time, Rohit Sharma was the skipper of the side when the Indian team won the Asia Cup in 2018 of the one-day international format.

In that edition, Virat Kohli was rested from the whole tournament and that is why Rohit was appointed as the captain of Team India.
